If you’re new to roller skating, here are a few tips on how to turn quickly on roller skates.

When you’re starting out, it can be helpful to practice turning at slow speeds first so that you get the hang of it.

Once you know how to turn quickly, try doing it while moving along the ground. This will help you get used to the movement and make it easier when you start going faster.

How can we turn fast on roller skates?

There are 2 ways you can turn fast on roller skates while rolling forward.

1. toe transition

To perform toe transition:

  1. Slightly bend your knees
  2. If you are turning counterclockwise, stick your left toe out and cut it to a 45-degree angle.
  3. Now, your body weight should be on your right foot.
  4. Now obviously for most of this, you will be moving, so you’re using that momentum to help you turn counterclockwise to the back.
  5. Lift your back foot toe while you are turning at the same time.
  6. After you have completed your turn, put your heels back down.

2. Heal transition

Heal transitions are almost the same as performing toe transitions, the difference here is you stick your left heel out.

So, to perform heel transition, you have to:

  1. Slightly bend your knees
  2. If you are turning counterclockwise, stick your left heel out and cut it to a 45-degree angle.
  3. Now, your body weight should be on your right foot.
  4. Use that momentum to help you turn counterclockwise to the back.
  5. Lift your back foot heel while you are turning at the same time.
  6. After you have completed your turn, put your toes back down.

Mistake to avoid when turning fast on roller skates

When you are doing toe transition, do not put your heel down on your 45-degree leg. this will make the turn very difficult.

The only time you put your heel down is when you have completed a turn. this is the same for heel transition, only put your toe down once you have completed a turn.

How to speed up the turning on roller skates?

To speed up the turning, you can use your upper body to turn when you do toe transition or heel transition.

To do that, just simply rise both of your arms, and swing your arm clockwise or anticlockwise at the same time when you perform toe transition or heel transition. This should help you turn fast on roller skates.
