How to Roller Skate with Your Partner – The Basics

You’ll have to know a few basic roller skate tricks to do couple skating. You can add many cool tricks such as jumps or advanced spins to spice it up. The spice will be already there.

Depending on the theme, you can give your couple’s skating an artistic or aggressive touch.

These are the basic tricks you will need to partner skate.

1. Turns

When it comes to couples skating, turning is a must.

Your trucks are the key to your ability to manoeuvre in roller skating. You can turn if you place more weight on one of your trucks.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Look in the direction that you are turning with your head.
  2. Rotate your shoulders in one direction.
  3. Rotate your hips together.
  4. Tilt in the direction that you are turning.
  5. Push your body weight onto the side of the wheel.
  6. Don’t put your weight down on the skates by crouching. Instead, push it to one side.

This trick will be used a lot when you skate with your partner. This is not a trick. It is a fundamental component of all types of skating, including couple skating.

Follow these steps, and you will automatically turn.

However, it’s not as simple as that. You need to practice as a beginner.

Here are some exercises that can help you speed up your learning.

  1. Hold onto the railing and place your weight on one side. While holding onto the railing, make small turns with your feet. After several tries, you can move away from the railing to see if your feet feel comfortable with the motion.
  2. Place a cup, or another object, on the ground. The object will help you to focus on the goal. Try turning around the object. The turns may seem wide at first. Gradually, tighten the turns until you can turn sharply.
  3. Do the exercises on both sides to improve muscle memory.

  1. Hold onto a railing, and bring one foot in front of the other so that both your feet are in line.
  2. Do the same thing is standing still, but without the railing. It will be easy to do this while rolling if you keep still for even 10 seconds.
  3. Now, roll this trick.

This trick is easy and can be learned in less than an hour if you are committed and do it correctly.

3. T-Stop

This is an extremely difficult trick to master. Don’t worry! I’m here to help. The t-stop is based on a simple principle.

  1. Raise one foot and place it horizontally behind the other.
  2. Your feet should form a ‘T’ shape.
  3. Drag the horizontal leg along the floor.
  4. The friction will stop you from rolling.
  5. To ensure smooth drag, the wheels must be turned inwards.
  6. To ensure stability, most of your body weight should be on your front foot.
  7. The front foot will naturally turn the first time. However, try to keep it straight.

This trick will not help you with your partner skating. However, it is a simple trick that will help make different transitions in our partner skating.

4. Crossover Turns

This is the trick you and your partner will do 90 per cent of your couple skating routine.

Here’s how you do it.

  1. Suppose that you are turning to your left.
  2. Next, lift your right foot.
  3. Cross it over your left foot and put it on the ground.
  4. Now, lift your left foot up and place it beside your right foot.
  5. Keep repeating this, and you’ll be turning.

This trick is not easy. You don’t have to master it the first time. To learn it quicker, you can try the following.

  1. Try to hold your partner’s hands while you do it.
  2. Hold onto a railing and practice crossing your leg over while holding it.
  3. Practise – Crossing over while standing on grass. You won’t fall, and even if it does, it won’t hurt since you aren’t falling on concrete.
  4. Then, try it on the skating rink. It will become second nature.
  5. Practice both sides.

Couple skating may seem like it’s about being able to do complicated things with your feet while still being synchronized with your partner. This is not true. If you break them down it’s just a collection of crossovers in various directions and variations.

Crossovers are a part of life. The forward cross is crucial when ballroom skating with your significant others.

Here’s how to do it.

  1. Stand in place, and make a lemon shape with your feet.
  2. To make lemons, place your feet together and open them in the form of the letter V.
  3. Keep your feet open until they are really wide open.
  4. Now, close your feet and form an inverted “V” shape with your feet.
  5. The shape of lemon should be created by the movements of your feet.

Once you have the basics down, you can modify the trick.

  1. Make the same lemon but this time with your feet staggered.
  2. Once you can make lemonade with your staggering feet, it is time for the forward crossing.
  3. Now, if you’re doing the lemon with the staggered foot, don’t stop them when they are together. Instead, cross your feet as far as possible and return to your original position.
  4. Keep repeating.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed the forward cross, which is quite an achievement.

It is more comfortable and easier than doing an inverted V shape if you do a backcross. This is how it’s done.

  1. Look backwards when backward skating. This is crucial.
  2. Do the same as before, but in reverse.
  3. After you have the basic lemons down, use one foot to do the lemons and roll the other backwards.
  4. Do the same with the second leg.
  5. While doing this, you should be moving backwards in straight lines.
  6. After a few minutes of practice, your one-leg lemons become more fluid.
  7. When this happens, cross your one-foot lemons on the other foot while skating backwards.
  8. After practising for a while, the other leg will automatically cross.

This is how you can learn a good backwards crossing. You and your partner should look professional when you’re skating together.

You have to continue learning backwards things. You should have a good balance at this point, so these tricks will naturally come to you. Get started with the following:

  1. Backwards Inline
  2. Backwards crossover turns
  3. Backwards Stop (power stop).

  2. Leave your other foot on the ground and turn your head, shoulders and hips. Then, place it at a 180-degree angle with the other foot. To put it another way, place it in your backwards direction.
  3. As soon as you land on that foot, pick up the other foot and place it behind that foot.

Now you can transition from skating forwards to backwards.
