Two main surfaces are used in the construction of a roller-skating center. Which one is better? It all depends on what type of skating you prefer.
Concrete Skating Floors
We will begin with the concrete floor. This might cause some people to be a little confused.
Concrete floors can be more slippery than you might think. And as you can imagine, it’s a lot harder when you fall. Roller skaters prefer concrete floors, who love to spin and perform other power moves like jam skaters.
The smoother floor gives you more momentum to spin. Concrete floors are significantly cheaper to install than wood floors when it comes to cost.
Concrete roller rinks are less expensive to maintain and last for longer periods.
Concrete Skating Floors Are Not The Only Option
Wood paneling is another popular type of rink flooring. Wood paneling provides a more comfortable but still stickier skate surface.
Wood flooring is best for grip. Wood flooring is more popular with skaters who love groundwork because of its grip.
It is also less painful than concrete flooring to fall on, which people like. It is a great choice for casual and new skaters.
Wooden roller rinks require care and attention. Roller rinks are durable but need to be appropriately sealed and repaired if damaged. If the roller rink is not maintained correctly, moisture can enter and cause irreparable damage.
Can We Skate on Concrete?
Yes, You can skate on concrete. But concrete floors are very hard and slick by nature.
This flooring material allows the skaters to do power spins and can be sped up quickly due to its hardness.
Concrete surfaces are dangerous for skating. Concrete surfaces can be slippery and cause people to fall.
Hard skating wheels are essential if you plan to skate on concrete surfaces well.
Concrete surfaces and hard skating wheels will allow you to control how you spin and perform many other skating tricks.
Another surface that is similar to concrete is asphalt. It’s slippery, making it easier to allow soft wheels to thrive on them.
You will likely fall off if you try any other wheel than soft ones.
Suitable Wheels For Skating on Concrete
A soft wheel can make a big difference in how smooth your ride is.
But you claim that you skate on concrete ramps. That means that you are interested in learning a few tricks.
I have seen a lot of figure skating tricks and can confirm that you can make more significant mistakes with harder wheels without falling.
This brings me to the durometer rating. The main differences are illustrated in this image. Comfort/vibrations and good grip/poor grip are the two main differences I’m focusing on. Concrete is generally very smooth. Unless it’s designed not to be.
It’s possible to get mid-range wheels for as low as 85A or even 88A without sacrificing a good ride.
As I have already mentioned, hard wheels won’t bite, so it’s much easier to correct errors without falling.
It is a good idea to ask other skaters what wheels they use and why. If you are lucky enough to meet nice people, you might even be allowed to try out different wheels.
