There are a lot of songs about women who have overcome their abusive relationships or left an abusive man. Still, this is the only one that genuinely made me think, “Damn. What a queen.”
It probably doesn’t talk much about the impact the man had, but more about what the woman is going to do about it going forward. She’s not crying anymore. She’s over that. There’s such an “I don’t give a shit” aura to this song that it’s super empowering.
4. September – Earth, Wind & Fire – Release Date 1978
Any list of the top roller skating songs of the 70s wouldn’t be complete without Earth, Wind & Fire’s awesome song September.
Another great upbeat song will have your feet moving and singing along.
5. That’s the Way (I Like It) – KC and the Sunshine Band – Release Date 1975
The song was quite controversial when it was released because of its lyrics and title. In comparison to today’s music, it doesn’t seem very objectionable.

One of my all-time favorite songs is Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry.
I love listening to this song, and it always makes me feel like wanna skates.
Released in 1976, this song was the only hit for Wild Cherry.
If you didn’t watch the video, you should probably do that. A trumpeter is playing the trumpet, and it’s getting pretty cool at the end.
8. You Should Be Dancing – Bee Gees – Release Date 1976
It’s hard to believe you are making a list of the best 1970s roller-skating music and not including the song “You Should Be Dancing “by the Bee Gees.
One of my favorite roller skating songs from the 70s is You Should Be Dancing, by the Bee Gees. It has always been one of my favorites because it was their big hit, and it’s catchy and fun.
9. Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees – Release Date 1977
Stayin’ Alive is one of the Bee Gees signature songs. This is one of the Bee Gees best songs from Saturday Night Fever’s movie.
The Bee Gees’ other great rollers skating songs include Jive Talkin, How Deep Is Your Love, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, and Too Much Heaven.

Music from the 1980s might be different than music today, but there’s no denying how iconic it is. Some of the best roller skating music was released during this era, and you can’t forget some of those other aspects.
I started DJing when I was in high school, but my first job was at the roller rink in my town. Vinyl records were still popular back then, and I used to love how they made the bass shake and roll across the floor.
Rollerblades became popular in this decade, and you would see people at the rink either wearing quad skates or inline skates.

1. Jam On It – Newcleus – Release Date 1984
WE ABSOLUTELY NEED THIS KIND OF MUSIC AND UNITY AGAIN. This kind of music brought together every type of person and culture so did the rave days of the 90s, man. I wish we could go back in time. There was actually peace, love, unity, and respect.
Everybody didn’t matter if the person next to you was white, black-purple, or alien. We all got down together. This song was way ahead of its time.
This track is one of two of my favorite breakdances that I know.
2. Thriller – Michael Jackson – Release Date 1982
Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, was an undisputed baron of the 1980s. You can’t really make a list of his best songs and music videos from that decade because it’s too hard to narrow it down. In my opinion, Thriller is one of my all-time best songs.
Though I could have listed 12 Michael Jackson songs from the 80s, I chose to keep this list diverse and provide one.
3. Let the Music Play – Shannon – Release Date 1983
I remember growing up in the 1980s as a teenager. We would hang out at the roller skating rink and simply kick like ATL.
I have some great memories of this place. It’s been packed for a long time, and the floor has the best old school jams.
4. Another One Bites the Dust – Queen – Release Date 1980
I think Freddy Mercury and Queen are among the best singers and bands of all time.
My favorite Queen song to skate to is Another One Bites the Dust. It has a brilliant bassline, and that’s high on my list for a great roller skating song
5. Round and Round – Ratt – Release Date 1984
This song feels like a summer memory for me. WE REALLY LIKED THIS SONG when I was on a summer retreat with some friends.
I even remember playing at the roller rink we went to with some friends.
It brings back memories. Those were the best years to grow up for sure. I loved those songs from the 80s!
6. Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi – Release Date 1986
If the 80s are known for anything, it’s definitely known for big hair. No band represented that better than Bon Jovi. It might take a while before you can get into the groove of this song, but the bridge and chorus are worth the effort.
The song also has a really cool synthesized background “ooo ooo ooo ahh ahh ahh” playing throughout the verses. It can be good for fast skating, and I’ve placed it on my playlist.
7. No Parking (On The Dance Floor) – Midnight Star – Release Date 1983
This was my jam in elementary school in the early 80s at skate palace. I’d attempt some stupid breakdance move on roller skates & bust my ass & slink off & play some Galaga.
8. Take on Me – A-Ha – Release Date 1985
One of my favorite songs is Take on Me. It was a huge hit in the music video era when MTV first emerged in the 80s. Somehow it’s still popular 35 years later, which says something about its cool factor!
9. Push It – Salt-N-Pepa – Release Date 1986
I’m obsessed with skating to this 80s classic song.
Push It by Salt-N-Pepa is one of the best songs to skate to. It’s got such a great up-tempo beat that’s really funky & fun, which makes me feel like I’m back at the rink. Push It is also one of my favorite cassettes.
10. Bizarre Love Triangle – New Order – Release Date 1986
80s music was just as popular at skating rinks. One of the bands I remember skating to as a teenager was Bizarre Love Triangle, New Order.
I still enjoy the Extended Dance Mix of this song, even after all this time. Every time I hear it, I’m taken back to my youth when skaters would play it at the rink. It’s hard not to love that version!
11. Pour Some Sugar On Me – Def Leppard – Release Date 1987
Next up is the hit song by English band Def Leppard, Pour Some Sugar on Me.
This rock anthem from the 1980s has a great drumline and an awesome power chorus. It’s one of my go-to songs when I want to speed up on the rink floor.
12. Rapper’s Delight – The Sugarhill Gang – Release Date 1980
Some of the best roller skating music across all genres is funk.
And the Sugarhill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight is a hit when it comes to great music for roller skating. This song was one of the first hits in hip-hop, and I just love to skate to this every time I skate.
13. Double Dutch Bus – Frankie Smith – Release Date 1981
“Give me a ho if you got your funky bus pass!” How many songs start with such a great lyric?
I absolutely love to skate to this song. It is one of the best songs if you want to do some freestyle or shuffle skating. I would say that any time this song comes on at my local rink, it’s always a hit with people. Even if they’ve never heard it before
14. Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll – Vaughan Mason & Crew – Release Date 1980
Almost all of the videos I found of this song were roller skating-based. Both jam skating and rhythm are skating to be seen, and some people just boogieing down on roller skates.
Best 10 Roller Skating Music in the 90s
I think roller skating music has reached its pinnacle in the 70s and 80s. However, I still think there are some great songs from the new decade that deserve recognition. Let’s see what we got!
1. C’Mon ‘N Ride It (The Train) – Quad City DJs – Release Date 1996
I love “The Train.” My playlist is full of great skating music from the 90s. I’ve listened to this roller skating music for years, and it has never irritated me like other older songs tend to do. I’m immediately energized and ready to start my skate whenever this particular song comes on.
2. Ice, Ice Baby – Vanilla Ice – Release Date 1990
This song was used in many videos and had a lot of popularity during the 90s.
Since it first hit the radio, TV, and rink, this song has been in rotation. It has a nice bassline that was taken from Queen’s song.
I used to work as a DJ at the local skating rink, and I played this song more times than I could count.
3. Jump Around – House of Pain – Release Date 1992
Jump Around is another great 90s roller skating song. I like its upbeat sound that makes me want to “jump up, jump up, and get down” every time I hear it. This song is at the top of my playlist
4. U Can’t Touch This – MC Hammer – Release Date 1990
MC Hammer had an incredible following in the 90s. One of his most popular songs was U Can’t Touch This. I loved this song so much, and it remains one of my favorite songs to date. The baseline is great (another rip-off of a great 70s song – Super Freak by Rick James). It was so fun to mix both these songs together
5. This is How We Do It – Montell Jordan – Release Date 1995
This is How We Do It by Montell Jordan is one of my favorite songs from the 90s. It has a great party beat and is perfect for listening to while you roller skate.
6. No Diggity – Blackstreet ft. Dr. Dre, Queen Pen – Release Date 1996
No Diggity is an excellent song choice for roller skating. The slow funk in the song really grooves to the beat, and it’s a lot of fun to dance to. It helps give a good steady rhythm when skating, making it perfect for recreational skating. Good music choices.
7. Whoomp! (There It Is) – Tag Team – Release Date 1993
“Party People!” “Whoomp! There It Is” is just one of those fun, upbeat songs that always smile on my face. It’s not at the top of my list but hearing it at roller rinks always brings me joy.
8. Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinead O’Connor – Release Date 1990
The song played a lot for a while, and I got sick of it. We often played it at one of our slow dances.
I can go on and on about how popular this song is. People all over the world sing it! I can’t believe penguins like to slow skate on this music too.
9. Baby Got Back – Sir Mix-A-Lot – Release Date 1992
Baby Got Back is one of those raunchy, upbeat, awesomely funny songs that I still love 30 years later.
When I hear this song, I still laugh. It’s just fun to skate and boogie down. Some of your parents might not like your kids listening to it, but it doesn’t seem inappropriate these days.
10. Motownphilly – Boyz II Men – Release Date 1991
I always liked this group for their ability to sing acapella. In most of their songs, there’s a segment where instruments stop playing, and the four of them lay down a harmonious vocal line.

From the 70s, 80s, and 90s to the new millennium. Here is what I have on my playlist that I enjoy playing when cutting my rug at the rink.
1. Uptown Funk – Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – Release Date 2014
This song has a really uplifting feel, and it’s great to skate to because the beat is so catchy. There’s a nice trumpet/horn section that takes you on this amazing journey. Whenever I hear this song, I can’t help but skate!
This is a great song to have on your playlist.
2. Happy – Pharrell Williams – Release Date 2013
I know many people who first started roller skating because it made them happy! If that’s why you do it, I think this song would be perfect for your playlist.
I love this song, and it always reminds me of happier times.
3. Hey Ya! – Outkast – Release Date 2003
I really enjoy listening to Hey Ya by Outkast. They’re a cool band, and this song is their best uptempo track, in my opinion. It’s great as background music while skating.
Plus, it has a nice beat that I like to skate to or just dance to until it makes you sweat.
4. I Gotta Feeling – Black Eyed Peas – Release Date 2009
One of my favorite songs from this decade is I Gotta Feeling from the Black Eyed Peas.
One of my favorite DJs, David Guetta, made this song. It goes well with where I’m now and is definitely a roller-skating song. Whenever I hear it, it’s like a breath of fresh air that gets me into a good mood
5. Toxic – Britney Spears – Release Date 2003
I like Britney Spears, but I’m not a die-hard fan. One of her best songs is “Toxic,” which is all about having fun and being toxic. It features a funky instrumental with synthesizers and a surf guitar. There have been so many remixes that I’ve heard over the years.
6. Party Rock Anthem – LMFAO – Release Date 2011
Everyone has a different opinion on Party Rock Anthem, and this is definitely one that I can relate to. The song and the corresponding video are good, with lots of powerful imagery. Plus, this song will get you up and out there skating.
7. Wake Me Up – Avicii – Release Date 2013
I love good dance music. One of the best songs of the last decade is “Wake me up.” The uptempo beat is so fun to dance to, and it has a great song all night long.
8. We Found Love – Rhianna – Release Date 2011
Another one of my favorites from this era is ‘We Found Love” by Rhianna. It’s a great, uptempo song. It was written with one of my favorite DJs – Calvin Harris, who wrote and produced the track. ‘We Found Love’ is just a perfect song, and I love each second.
9. Titanium – David Guetta feat. Sia – Release Date 2011
I would recommend this song to anyone who loves David Guetta feat. Sia. It may be my favorite song of the ones I listened to today.
I’m really into this song. I think the slower, live version might be a good choice for those who are looking for a little bit slow on our skates.
10. Harlem Shake – Baauer – Release Date 2013
I like the Harlem Shake. Yes, the song became popular from a meme on the internet, but I don’t care. It has a good beat and is fun to dance to, so I don’t mind why it became popular
11. Sunshine – Reggie Watts – Release Date 2014
This song is my favorite. What amazes me the most is that this video (which I also think is the best of them all) has only 400,000 views. It blows my mind that some other videos have 6 million views, 7.5 million views, and even 16.5-million views! Oh people
12. Number One – Tuxedo – Release Date 2015
I just love the acting. The girl that he is interested in him as he thinks she is, as opposed to the other.
The lyrics suggest the other girl, but the dude is so caught up on the other girl.
My question is, aside from the other guy being second? is he really the winner?
13. Say So – Doja Cat – Release Date 2019
When I first heard this, I immediately thought Nile Rogers ( of Chic fame with Bernard Edwards ) had a new artist and song on the charts.
However, it was Dona Cat. If you ever read this Dona Cat, I want you to know it was the most feel-good beat and rhythm that brought back memories of hitting the dance floor in the 70s.
I loved how she rocked her body with confidence and how she moved and worked the camera and didn’t care what she wore, and it was so refreshing to see!
14. Gonna Be Alright – Aneessa – Release Date 2021
I have a friend who is discouraged. This song is really inspiring to her. After hearing this song, she has been more social. I personally think this song is a way to show people who feel alone and beat down that they are not the only ones. We have got to keep the faith cause it’s gonna be Alright!
