Military Appreciation Night – May 19 vs Des Moines

Saturday, May 19 marks the 4th Annual Military Appreciation Day for the No Coast Derby Girls, Lincoln’s only all-female roller derby team. They play host to the Des Moines Derby Dames, one of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s (WFTDA) newest members. Each year the league honors those who have or are currently serving our country and allow free admission to anyone who shows their Military ID the night of the bout.

The night will kick off with the Road Warrior All Stars facing off against the Des Moines B team at 7pm. Immediately following that bout, the Mad Maxines will take the track agains the Des Moines All Star team. The Maxines are currently 6-3 with their most recent win to Sioux City on May 5th. Can the Maxines continue racking up the wins at home? Come find out May 19th at Pershing Center!

The No Coast Derby Girls are proud to be a Cell Phones for Soldiers destintaion once again this season. Please bring your used or unwanted cell phones to the game on Saturday and drop them off at the merch booth. These phones will be recycled and calling cards will be distributed to soldiers overseas!

Men’s Roller Derby Debut at Pershing May 5th

The Sioux City Roller Dames head to Lincoln on Saturday, May 5th and they aren’t the only roller derby team coming to town…their men’s derby team, the Sioux City Korn Stalkers will be with rolling in with them. Meeting up for the first time in Lincoln, NE will be the Sioux City men’s team versus Nebraska’s first all men’s roller derby team, the Big O Roller Bros out of Omaha, NE.

The Big O Roller Bros are Nebraska’s first all men’s roller derby team Saturday, May 5th will be their first bout. This is the first sanctioned all men’s roller derby bout held in Nebraska and you cannot miss this historical moment at Pershing Center! We will open up at 7pm with the sanctioned women’s bout, your Mad Maxines versus the Sioux City Roller Dames followed by the men’s bout. Don’t miss the edge of your seat, thrilling action that is roller derby AND be the first to see men’s roller derby right here in Lincoln, NE!

Springfield Up Next For No Coast; Friday April 27th

With only a week off after a tough double header weekend at Pershing Center, the Mad Maxines head up to Omaha to take on the Dallas Derby Devils for a closed bout on Sunday, April 22. This bout will apply towards rankings, but will not be open to the public for viewing. Dallas will be facing Omaha the night before in a full production public bout at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, IA. Many leagues across the country set up travel in this fashion, getting more bang for their travel buck and setting up as many bouts while on the road over the weekend. Usually only one of those bouts is produced in full public fashion while the other is done more cost-effectively for the hosting league in a no-production, closed to the public “hangover” bout before the visiting league heads home.

On Friday, April 27th the No Coast derby girls host the Springfield Roller Girls of Missouri at Pershing Center. This bout is always an interesting match-up as rosters shuffle year after year. Wins have flip-flopped back and forth between these two South Central rivals, with No Coast coming away with the win in 2011.

Opening at 7pm will be No Coast’s home teams, the Roadies vs the Warriors followed by the Mad Maxines versus Springfield Roller Girls All Stars at 8pm.

Exciting Double Header Action Coming Up; Kansas City and Montreal April 6 & 7

Easter weekend brings TWO teams to Lincoln at the Pershing Center. First up Friday night will be a tough match-up for #6 (SC Region) No Coast Derby Girls. It’s #2 Kansas City who finished 4th overall at WFTDA Championships this past October in Denver. Although their roster has shuffled, No Coast will be put to the test as to how they stack up against top level contenders. No Coast’s B team, the Road Warrior All stars will be taking on Kansas City’s B team, Plan B, in the opener at 7pm. Following up at 8pm will be the main event, the Mad Maxines vs the Kansas City Roller Warrior All Stars.

Saturday night will bring our Northern neighbors to town, waaaaaay North—–Montreal Roller Derby! The Canadians are looking for some serious South Central action as they will be playing three SC teams; No Coast, Kansas City and Omaha all during their Easter vacation in the Midwest. However, the No Coast vs Montreal match-up is scheduled as the main event at Pershing Center on Saturday night. Opening at 7pm will be No Coast’s home teams, the Roadies vs the Warriors followed by the Mad Maxines versus Montreal’s New Skids on the Block, their All Star Team at 8pm.

Saturday, March 31 will bring #12 (North Central Region) ranked North Star (Minneapolis, MN) to the capitol city to take on the No Coast Derby Girls in their third home bout of the season and fourth overall. These two teams have not gone head to head since April 12, 2008 in Lincoln where North Star skated away with the win. What has four years done to change the program at No Coast? Come and find out Saturday, March 31 as the Road Warrior All-Stars take on the North Star Northern Lights at 7pm followed by the Mad Maxines versus the North Star Supernovas at 8pm. No Coast Hits the Road; Heads to Green Country March 17

Will the luck of the Irish follow the Mad Maxines into Green Country territory? The No Coast Derby Girls All Star travel team, the Mad Maxines, head south to Tulsa, OK for an in-Region match-up versus #7 Green Country whose most notable recent victory was the upset they pulled off against Tampa Bay this past October at Regionals. With the Mad Maxines coming off a heartbreaking 3-point loss against #10 Omaha, the team will have to prove themselves to the derby community and win convincingly over the lower-ranked Green Country all star team.

“We need to clear up any confusion that rankers and leagues may have about No Coast this early on in the season and we have to do that with a win down in Tulsa,” says Ripa, captain of the Mad Maxines. “No disprespect to Omaha, they came in with a method that worked. We just adjusted too late to it and ran out of time. Foul trouble also played a huge role in that loss for us. Now it’s time to set it straight and we’ll do that down in Tulsa.”

•Years of derby experience: Rookie

•Teams: Road Warriors

•Favorite position to play: Blocking (back of the pack), Jammer

How did you come up with your derby name? I chose HellCat because my dad loves airplanes and the Hellcat was a WWII fighter plane. My number, F6F, is the model number of the Hellcat airplane. Kitty is a bit of a long story but comes from my real
name which is Catheryn or as most people call me Cat. I was working a basketball camp a few years ago and a younger camper christened me Kitty Cat. My teammates thought it was hilarious and it stuck. I didn’t like it at first, but hey if you can’t beat them join them.

Goals for the 2012 Season: To continue to learn and get better, roster for as many bouts as possible and help my team to be the best.

What do you do in “real life”? I’m a full time student at UNL and former student-athlete.

What Kind of Skates and Wheels do you roll on? Ridell R3′s and the wheels I pulled off a pair of skates I bought off Craigslist. I’mbnot really sure what kind they are. Lol. I’m hoping to get some Atom G-Rods.

Any pre-bout rituals? What is your derby pet peeve? My only ritual is to listen to music, visualize what I want do and “get in my zone.” I usually like to be alone for a few minutes while I do that. For basketball I’ve listened to the same song since Jr. High before every game. I’m still looking for that song for derby. Hopefully I find it soon. No pet peeves yet but I’m sure I’ll have some before the season is over.

Injuries? Only bruises and a busted lip so far.
